Obituary for James Lee Schermesser

Retired Funeral Director and Brother of John Schermesser, Owner of Schermesser Funeral Home

Jim Schermesser, 74, passed away in Sun City Florida after a 35-year battle with Parkinson’s Disease.  He was born February 19, 1943 in Akron to the late Victor and Mabel Schermesser.  Jim was a 1961 graduate of Garfield High School, where he was on the City Series Championship Football team his Junior and Senior year, coached by Babe Flossie.  After high school Jim graduated with honors from Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science, receiving his funeral director’s license in 1965 and his embalmer’s license in 1967.  Jim was awarded his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Mount Union College with a minor in psychology, doing his post graduate work at Akron University.  While at Mount Union, Jim participated in Track and Field where he set many track records under Coach Wuske.

Jim was employed by the Ohio Brass Company in Barberton as a Project Engineer and later as a salesman for Beckham Instruments.  Even though Jim was not a building contractor, he took great pride in the addition he built on his home after seven years of hard work.      

Jim is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Betty; sisters, Carol Orosa and Jeanie (Bryant) Schermesser-Stewart; brothers, Richard (Abbigail) and John (Michele) Schermesser, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.   

Funeral service will be held at 6 P.M. on Friday, December 15, 2017 at Schermesser Funeral Home, 600 E. Turkeyfoot Lake Rd. (SR619), Akron, Ohio 44319.  Family and friends may call on Friday from 4 P.M. until the time of the service at the funeral home.  A private family interment will be at Greenlawn Memorial Park.  To leave a special message online for the family, visit our website at
